For automation functionality, Jira Server and Jira Cloud have different set-up and features. This page outlines the main differences, and other things you should know.

Automation for Jira Server

In Jira Server and Jira Data Center, you can add automation functionality by installing the Automation for Jira Server Marketplace app. Once the app is installed, there is no limit for how many rules you can configure and execute.

However, note that many of the automation features developed for Jira Cloud in recent years are not available in Automation for Jira Server. These include:

Within Automation for Jira Server, there are two versions: Automation for Jira - Server Lite (for Jira Server only), and Automation for Jira Pro (for Jira Server and Jira Data Center). Learn more about Lite vs Pro.

Automation for Jira Cloud

In Jira Cloud, automation functionality is included out-of-the-box. However, there are limits to how many times rules can be executed per month, depending on which plan you’re on:

  • Free plan: There is a limit of 100 executions for all global and multi-project rules.

  • Standard plan: There is a limit of 500 executions for all global and multi-project rules.

  • Premium plan: There is a limit of 1,000 executions per user per month, pooled across all users and products. For example, if you have 200 users in your Jira Cloud Premium license, then you’ll have a limit of 200,000 global/multi-project rule executions per month.
