Catch email address is an email filter used within Jira incoming mails. If your mailbox that's used as an incoming mail server within Jira receives emails from multiple sources, and not all emails are intended to be processed by Jira's incoming mail handler (or if different emails are intended for different Jira projects), the catch email filters the emails that a specific mail handler should process.
You may also have multiple Incoming mail handlers on your site and use the catch email to specify which email handler should process a particular email from your mailbox.
Let's consider the below scenario:
You have a mailbox (support@domain.com) that is used to receive support queries and create respective issues in Jira. The mail server receives queries directed to various teams that use different projects in Jira to track their queries.
In this case, you can use catch email addresses to create issues in the respective projects on your Jira site.
For instance, engineering@domain.com and QA@domain.com could be the catch addresses.
The below table explains how it works:
宛先 | To/Cc/Bcc | Action performed by Jira mail handler |
---|---|---|
support@domain.com | engineering@domain.com | An issue/comment should be created in the Engineering project. |
support@domain.com | QA@domain.com | An issue/comment should be added in the QA project. |
support@domain.com | No catch email used | The mail handler won't process the email. |
None (email sent to catch email address only). | engineering@domain.com or QA@domain.com | The mail handler won't process the email. |
How to configure the catch email address:
Please follow the below steps to add a catch email address to your mail handler:
Go to Settings ( :settings: icon on the top right of your Jira homepage) > System > Incoming mail.
Select the Edit option against the mail handler where the catch email is supposed to be included.
The edit mail handler dialog box opens up. Click Next and populate the email address in the Catch Email field:
Click Save to save the configuration.
Once this is done, only the emails that are sent to the mailbox and have the catch email address in To/Cc/Bcc will be processed by the mail handler.
