Documentation for GreenHopper 3.8. Documentation for other versions of JIRA Agile is available too.
GreenHopper is now called JIRA Agile. Learn more.

The Planning Board in GreenHopper offers several viewing 'modes'. Each mode will present the product issues grouped by a specific criteria.

The possible modes are described below:

Project Overview

In the overview mode you will see all your product issues of your product backlog at once.

The summary box in the right hand column, will give you the overall statistics of your product backlog.
Note that in GreenHopper the product backlog is composed by all the issues that are not yet scheduled and all the issues that are associated with at least one unreleased JIRA fix version.

This is actually the best view to prioritise your issues.
You can play with the context of your overview mode to narrow down the issues to display.

By Versions

In the by Versions mode your product issues will be grouped by your project's unreleased JIRA fix versions.

The right hand column will display a single box for each unreleased JIRA fix version. All issues that are not associated with a JIRA fix version will be placed in the Unscheduled box. The centre pane of the Planning Board will display all the issues that are associated with the selected version. You can switch from a version to another via the version drop down or simply by clicking on the box header of the versions.

You will be able to add more fix versions via the 'manage' link on top of your column.
You can also organise your versions in a hierarchical way (like folders). Via the master setting directly in the column boxes, you can tell GreenHopper which version is a child of which version. Extremely useful when dealing with Releases/Sprints/Teams. Note that in the "master" boxes you can ask GreenHopper to display the issues that are associated with the master version and not associated with a child version - in other words, the pending issues.

Each version box will allow you to set a start date and a release date. These will be used to compute the various charts offered by GreenHopper.
Also you will be able to release these versions directly with the 'Release' button at the bottom of your version boxes. This action will trigger the release mechanism of JIRA and will capture a snapshot of all your charts before any issue swapping is done. These snapshots will be accessible via your Released Board.

This will be the best view to schedule your product issues.

By Components

In the by Components mode your product issues will be grouped by your project's JIRA components.

The right hand column will display a single box for each component of your project. All issues that are not associated with a component will be placed in the Unknown box. The centre pane of the Planning Board will display all the issues that are associated with the selected component. You can switch from a component to another via the component drop down or simply by clicking on the box header of the components.

You will be able to add more fix components via the 'manage' link on top of your column.
You can also organise your components in a hierarchical way (like folders). Via the 'master' setting directly in the column boxes, you can tell GreenHopper which component is a child of which component. Extremely useful when dealing with sub-components.

This will be a useful view to monitor the progression of your components.

By Assignees

In the by Assignees mode your product issues will be grouped by your project's assignable users.

The right hand column will display a single box for each assignable user of your project. All issues that are not associated with a user will be placed in the 'Unassigned' box. Of course this if your 'Allow unassigned issues' JIRA setting is enabled. The centre pane of the Planning Board will display all the issues that are associated with the selected user. You can switch from an user to another via the user drop down or simply by clicking on the box header of the users.

You will be able to register more users via the 'manage' link on top of your column.

This will be a useful view to monitor the workload of your project assignable users.

For visibility and performance reasons this Planning Board mode is not accessible if your project has more then 75 assignable users.
