Get and set notifications
Say no to FOMO (fear of missing out) by getting Hipchat to notify you when things are happening.
There are several ways to get notifications: email, SMS, in-app or push (on iOS and Android devices), so you'll never miss something important.
You can control both how you want to be notified and the things you're notified about - like when you're mentioned in a room or invited to chat.
Ways to get notifications
The ways you're notified depend on how you like to use Hipchat. Here's a quick summary:
- Email and SMS is set in your profile, and tells you about the things you've missed because you were away or offline.
- In-app is set in each app individually, and tells you about things happening right now, like being invited to a room or new 1-to-1 chat.
- Push is set in the Android or iOS app, and tells you about the things you've missed (while you were grabbing that second coffee).
Changing your notification settings
How you change your notification settings depends on the app you're using and how you want to be notified.
Email and SMS notifications
Email and SMS notifications are set up in your profile. They apply everywhere, no matter which app you like to use, and are sent when you're away or offline.
- In your browser, log into Hipchat.
- Go to Edit Profile > Notifications.
- Add a phone number, if you want to receive SMS notifications.
- Select the notifications you want to get by email or SMS and save your changes.
If you're using an iOS or Android app, you'll also see options to set your push notifications here, making it easy to mix and match your email, SMS, and push notifications.
アプリ内通知
In-app notifications are set up in each Hipchat app individually and appear while you're using it. This is where you choose things like whether Hipchat should play a sound, show a popup, or bounce the icon to get your attention.
(Getting distracted by all the beeps or bloops from the sound notifications? Find out how to turn off sounds below.)
プッシュ通知
Push notifications are sent when Hipchat is running in the background on your Android or iOS device, and you're not active in Hipchat on another device.
You can set up push notifications in the iOS and Android apps individually or in your profile (along with email and SMS notifications).
Setting per-room notifications
Keep up with all your rooms without getting notification overload. Choose different notification options for different rooms. This lets you keep multiple rooms open while turning the volume up for mission-critical rooms and down for other rooms. For example, you can choose to get notified about every message in your team's project room and only messages that @mention you in your social room.
The room notification settings affect in-app notifications only. They won't change, for example, the push notifications you receive in the mobile apps.
Set your room notifications to one of the following options:
- Loud sends you in-app notifications of every message in the room. You'll get shown popups for each message sent to the room. You'll also be notified for @all and @here mentions, as well as when someone @mentions you by name.
- Normal sends you in-app notifications for @all and @here mentions and when someone @mentions you by name.
- Quiet mutes all in-app notifications except when someone @mentions you by name.
Per-room notification settings are available in the Mac, Windows and web apps, only.
You can also change the default notification level for all of your rooms.
When you'll be notified
To avoid a notification storm, Hipchat only sends notifications when it's pretty sure you haven't seen something. For example, if you're mentioned in a room that you have open (and in focus) right now, Hipchat assumes you've seen the mention, and won't bug you with a notification.
When you're offline (logged out) or away (not active in any Hipchat app right now), Hipchat will let you know what you've missed with an email, SMS, or push notification.
While you're using Hipchat, it'll use in-app notifications (like sounds, popups, or bouncing icons) to get your attention. This might be because you're in a different room or chat, or have Hipchat running in the background while you're working in another application.
