In Atlassian cloud, can I set up a staging and testing environment?

Yes, there are a few different ways to set up a testing and staging environment:

Option one: Use a free dev environment

We offer a free cloud development environment for Jira and Confluence Cloud that allows you to develop new apps, test a migration or new functionality. This is a good option when you need an ongoing or permanent environment to test in.

It has the same functionalities as a production instance, however, you have a limited number of licenses depending on the product:

  • Jira Software: 5 users free
  • Jira Service Desk: 1 agent free
  • Jira Core: 5 users free
  • Confluence: 5 users free

Option two: Use an extended trial

Atlassian offers fully functional evaluations of our cloud products for a period of 7 days (which can be extended to a maximum of 37 days upon request). Learn more about cloud trials. This is a good option when you need a dev instance for a short period of time, for example, assessing cloud functionality or testing a migration from server to cloud.

Existing self-hosted (server or Data Center) customers can also take advantage of an extended cloud trial to move to cloud at no additional cost. This offer helps you explore cloud over the duration of your existing maintenance period to make sure cloud is right for you, test your migration, or complete a full switch to cloud. Learn more.

Option three: Purchase a cloud subscription

If you need more licenses than the dev environment offers, you can buy the smallest user tier ($10/month) and keep that as your testing/staging site. To set this up, you can:

  1. Copy your production data over to the new cloud site.
  2. Disable the extra users you copied over.
  3. Enable up to 10 users and start working in the staging environment.

Option four: Set up a Free site

If you’ve chosen a Free plan for Jira Cloud or Confluence Cloud, you can set up a site directly to use as a test environment.

Remember not to exceed your user and data limits. If you attempt to migrate more users than the plan allows, your migration will fail. Free plans don’t offer audit logs or the same permissions as Standard and Premium plans, so this isn’t a viable testing option if you ultimately intend to upgrade.
