The Jira platform is our workflow engine that allows you to track units of work through customizable workflows. Work in Jira is organized into projects, where you can define granular user permissions and assign roles to users and groups. Built-in project templates offer a way to get started quickly on particular project types (i.e. Process Management, Project Management, etc.). This allows for your entire organization to track their issues at a project level with both control and complete transparency.
That said, Jira Software isn’t just a tool for software development teams. It has a special set of features that can be useful for any business team (that Jira Core doesn’t have):
Agile Functionality - Jira Software enables project management using agile and mixed methodologies. Your team can plan projects from backlog to sprint, create fully customizable Scrum and Kanban Boards, and use robust reporting features, ranging from burndown charts to velocity measurements. Within Scrum boards, you can use Jira’s estimation features to prioritize your backlog, log time against your work, and plan your current as well as future sprints.
More Customization - Jira Software gives you the ability to customize your work items, workflows, fields, etc. to suit non-software development needs.
Multiple Boards per Project (Classic Projects Only) - In Jira Software, you can create multiple boards in each of your projects, which allows your teams to have several layers of project organization. Each board can select work based on an issue filter, enabling your teams to work on items from multiple projects into one board if they prefer. Changing a board’s issue filter will not move those tasks.
Jira Software Cloud - Exclusive Features
Additionally, there are a few features exclusive to Jira Software Cloud, which are not available in Jira Software Server, Jira Service Desk (Server/Cloud), and Jira Core (Server/Cloud).
Next-Gen Projects - Next-Gen projects are the newest projects in Jira Software. They're perfect for teams that want to quickly jump in and get started.
Modular Features - In our Next-Gen projects, you can enable only the features you want, which allows you to control the complexity of your project configuration.
Roadmaps - Roadmaps allow you to create, manage and visualize your team's epics. Roadmaps are useful for planning large pieces of work several months in advance and planning large groups of stories across different sprints. Roadmaps are only available in Next-Gen Jira Software projects.
Pages (available with Confluence Cloud integration) - When you need to create documents related to your work in Jira, you can connect your Next-Gen project to a Confluence space. Once you’ve linked the space, you can create Confluence pages and view a table of contents (or “page tree”) of the pages in your linked space, all from within your Jira Software project.
