Manage email notifications

Bitbucket Cloud sends you email notifications about activity that takes place in your account or things you watch. You can watch objects that belong to you or objects that belong to other accounts you can access, such as your team.

You can also configure a per-repository mailing list for issues. For information on setting up mailing lists, see Setting email preferences for an issue tracker.

Understand how notifications work

While you can unsubscribe from certain notifications, you can't turn off notifications from Bitbucket when:

  • Another user mentions you in a comment.
  • Your access to a repository or team changes.

For each repository, you can select categories of objects or specific instances of objects, you want to be notified about. Bitbucket notifies you when these objects get created or updated.  For example, you can watch for all the pull request activity in the tutorials.bitbucket.org repository. Or, you can watch only the pull request the user tutorials created in that repository.

Bitbucket automatically sets some watches for you. For example, Bitbucket automatically sets watches for objects you create or objects with activities you participate in. Bitbucket automatically sets a watch for:

  • any repository you create
  • any pull request you create
  • issues or pull requests you comment on
  • any commit you make

Any single repository encompasses many objects and activities often too numerous to watch individually.  So when you create a repository, Bitbucket assumes you want to receive notifications about every object created in or action occurring in that repository. By default, Bitbucket configures the repository notifications so that you get notified when another user:

  • Creates or updates a pull request. Updates include new commits, comments, and workflow changes.
  • Pushes a commit or comments on an existing commit.
  • Forks the repository.
  • Creates a new issue or updates an existing one. Updates include new comments, updates, and transitions through the workflow.
  • Changes the Wiki by creating a new page or updating an existing one.

(info) Bitbucket will only send notifications to you for events that you do not initiate yourself.

These repository-wide notifications go to your email unless you disable receiving email notifications or you unsubscribe from specific notifications. You can turn these repository-wide notifications off on a per-repository basis. You can also turn them off globally.

Finally, you can set watches on individual objects you have interest in. You do this using the watch   button or link for the object.

Configure repository-wide notifications

  1. Navigate to the repository.
  2. Click the watch  button in the right corner of the screen.
The system displays the repository watch dialog:
  3. Select the repository-wide objects to watch under the Subscribe to notifications about section.
You'll notice this section is only active if you're watching the repository and only shows the objects you have permissions to see.

Watch or stop watching an object

You can also set your own watches on your account objects or other uses' objects.

  1. Navigate to the object.
  2. Click the watch  button.

You can also manage your watches from the Manage page.

  1. From your avatar in the bottom left, click Bitbucket settings.
  2. Select Notifications under General.
  3. The Notifications page displays.
  4. Press the Manage link you want in the You are watching section.
  5. Hover over an individual object and press the  button on that object to stop watching it.
  6. Press Close when you're done.

Enabling or disabling email

Email notifications go to your primary email. If you have multiple email addresses defined for your account, they do not receive notifications.

  1. From your avatar in the bottom left, click Bitbucket settings.
  2. Select Notifications under General.
  3. Depending on your current setting you can Enable email or Disable email.
When email is disabled, the Email me about settings are hidden.
